The documentary, " The Russian Five, " traces the journey of five Russian hockey players who helped transform the Detroit Red Wings into Stanley Cup champions in 1997 and 1998, and another in 2002 with two of them still on the NHL club's roster. The Russian five consisted of Sergei Fedorov, Slava Fetisov, Slava Kozlov, Igor Larionov and Vladimir Konstantinov. On May 31, the film will have its New York premiere at the IFC Center. This is the first feature film for director Joshua Riehl, who started the project in 2012 having been captivated by the Russian players as a Red Wings fan growing up. This is not a little Detroit movie about hockey. This film is about hopes and dreams and covert missions, and taking chances. It's about struggling to fit in when you don't speak English. It's about learning the Soviet way of hockey, particularly playing in five-man units and emphasizing puck control and finesse over toughness and bodychecking. And in the end, it's about success against all odds. The time was in the late 1980s and this was the Cold War. The Soviet Union was America's mortal enemy. But the Detroit Red Wings were desperate for hockey talent. They had been ridiculed as the "Dead Things" and sought ways to turn that image around. In a plot that looks like it could be lifted from a spy novel, the Red Wings first brought Fedorov over in 1990, sneaking him away under the cover of darkness to a private jet. His is a story about bags of money and promises of a Corvette. Detroit's general manager, Jimmy Devellano, concocted the idea of drafting Russian players and then getting them to defect. He drafted Fedorov, Konstantinov and Kozlov, while the other two were drafted elsewhere before making their way to Detroit. "I knew there were good players in Russia, " Devellano recalls in the film. "The problem was that there was an Iron Curtain. " Fedorov's defection was followed by Konstantinov. Kozlov came over as the Soviet Union was collapsing. Larionov and Fetisov won their official release in 1989 from the Soviet Red Army. The Los Angeles Times r eviewed the documentary and called this a "sports film to savor" and writer Kenneth Turan said it was "moving in ways you won't see coming. " Intercutting game footage with interviews, this film is also a testament to the difficult journey faced by Riehl, who came back to his hometown of Detroit from film school in Austin to make what he calls "the ultimate Detroit documentary. " The executive producer, Daniel Milstein, who made his money initially in the banking industry, funded the movie to give Riehl a chance to show audiences how important the Russians are to the NHL. "It's one of the greatest stories in Stanley Cup history, " Riehl said. This little documentary that could had its world premiere at the 2018 Freep Film Festival, where it won the Spirit of Michigan Award. And it grabbed the audience award for the best nonfiction film at the Traverse City Film Festival. Last fall, Riehl screened the film in front of the Red Wings on the opening night of training camp. On March 22, the documentary made its theatrical release, with 44 theaters booked in the first two weeks. In early May, "The Russian Five" screenings were expanded to 16 cities outside of Michigan, and Riehl is hopeful for a successful debut in New York coming up. "So far, through self-distribution, we've got a box office gross of over $430, 000 and this weekend could determine if we'll break that $500, 000 mark, " Riehl said. The most touching part of the documentary involves the tragic story of Konstantinov, whose career was cut short in a limousine crash just six days after the Wings' 1997 Stanley Cup victory. Konstantinov spent several weeks in a coma before finally pulling through. After Detroit recaptured the Stanley Cup in 1998, Konstantinov was wheeled onto the ice to celebrate the victory with his teammates. Konstantinov's injury and his courage in recovery was an inspiration to Riehl, who himself was in an auto accident at age 19 and suffered a major back injury, requiring a series of surgeries. It was while he was laid up in physiotherapy and feeling depressed that he decided to make this film. When his grandparents gave him a Konstantinov jersey, it proved to be a moment of timely reflection for Riehl. "What Vladdy went through was so much worse, " Riehl said. "But that strength within kept him persevering, " the director added. "So it was a lightning rod. " At film school, the director that he was working for, Al Reinert, told Riehl in no uncertain terms that he needed to make this film. But trying to find someone in Texas to underwrite the project was fruitless because no one understood or knew the story. Riehl realized he needed to move back to Detroit in 2015. A few months later, he met Jenny Feterovich, a Russian-born producer who operates a production company in Detroit. She was thrilled to be the producer on the film. "I could not turn this down. You could not write a story like this if you tried, " Feterovich said. She contacted her good friend Milstein, an NHL agent who at that time represented only one Russian player, Pavel Datsyuk. They pitched him on the idea and requested $350, 000 to tell this legacy story. Milstein came on board with the money, but the film will end up costing perhaps three times as much because a small team of three is undertaking a self-distribution effort and these costs weren't part of the original budget. Another unexpected cost was obtaining the full rights to "We Are The Champions. " But Riehl said that Milstein didn't hesitate in going over the film's original licensing budget because of the song's importance to the story. As well as being shown in theaters, there are plans for a DVD. "The Russian Five" is also being released on iTunes, which will be available for purchase with this pre-order link. "I hope people see it in theaters because the response is very much like going to a game, " Riehl said. "There is an energy in the room, remembering those moments together and sharing the sadness when the limo accident happened. ".

Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2019 Verified Purchase I was born a Red Wings fan and will die as such. I remember the incidents in the movie vividly, but had only heard rumors of what it took to get these 5 amazing players together on one team. Knowing the story now only makes me appreciate them even more and miss old school hockey. If you're a Wings fan, or a fan of hockey at all, I highly recommend watching this. You won't be disappointed. Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2019 Verified Purchase I was born during the heat of the '96 playoffs. I grew up hearing and knowing the of the Russian 5. I have been able to pronounce Konstantinov, Larionov, Fedorov, Kozlov, and Fetisov for as long as I can remember, but I don't remember seeing them play. I saw this movie in the theater with my two friends, and it took our breaths away. Despite knowing the story our entire lives, we were completely caught up in this wonderful documentary, we laughed, we cried, we cheered. I can never thank the filmmakers enough for bringing this time alive for me, so I could truly enjoy the spectacle that was the Russian 5. Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2019 Verified Purchase If you are a fan of NHL in general, you owe yourself to watch this documentary. It was an amazing watch on how the Wings helped tear down the lines of who you can and can't draft. Without the Russian Five, Ovi might not have been here or your other favorite Russian or Chek players. I started watching the Wings in 96 and have been a fan since. Thanks Bishop wherever you are for getting me started down the road of a diehard fan. Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2019 Verified Purchase Amazing and insightful, it brought back tons of great memories. When the Wings got swept in 1995 I broke a television. I cried when they won it in 1997. This was a great documentary about a truly fascinating part of NHL history. Quite enjoyable and I recommend it to any hockey fan even those not to be Red Wing fans, poor souls! A great read. Hard to put down Reviewed in Canada on December 20, 2019 Verified Purchase A must read for any hockey fan A reminder or educator of the walls that were up for the Russians to leave/come here, the prejudice that existed as against them and the impact they had on the game. Also how money, ingenuity and drive developed a dynasty in the non-salary cap era. Compelling. The inside story, how Detroit pulled it off.
